Running is bad for you. Right? It must be so, since so many runners - between 66% and 85% each year depending on which figures
you read - get injured!
You and I know that running is GOOD for us. It's an activity we enjoy.
It gives us countless health benefits, too. It's running BADLY that causes problems.
Most injuries
are not just due to bad luck. Nor are they due to us being 'wonky' or physically unsuited to running. They can
be traced to something we DO when we run. Running may appear to be instinctive, but it is a skilful and precisely coordinated
sequence of movements that we CAN learn to do better!
Give someone a racquet and ask them to play
a game of tennis, and they probably won't return a single serve. Throw them in a swimming pool for the first time,
and if they are lucky they won't drown. With time to practise these activities alone or with friends,
they may become reasonably capable of hitting a ball, and learn to splash around without drowning. But without expert tuition,
they won't have the SKILL to do these activities to the best of their ability.
Why should this not
be true of running?
There are many ways to become a more efficient runner. Some of these rely on trial and
error and experience, which can work for some people provided they don't repeatedly get injured or give up. Others take
a more structured approach. Ultimately, if we are wanting to run more efficiently or skilfully, it doesn't matter how
we get there!
In the quest to improve my own running - to allow me to run injury-free, to help me nail the 2:59 marathon, to give me the
ability to complete an ultra-marathon feeling as fresh as when I started, give or take a little fatigue - I looked at many
different structures, schedules and philosophies. The one that made most sense to me was The Pose Method® of Running.
The Pose Method® of Running, which teaches us how to run biomechanically efficiently and is being continually
researched and developed by Dr Nicholas Romanov, is all about using posture, gravity and your body weight to generate forward
movement with optimal muscular effort. It does this by minimising the elements in our running gait that cause us
to brake and increase the impact on our bodies. Using the Pose Method® of running, we can become more efficient
runners and decrease our risk of many common injuries.
The really great thing is that ANYONE can learn to
run skilfully. Whatever your shape, your size, your genetically predisposed athletic ability, your pace and your running
goals, training with the Pose Method® of Running can help you. It doesn't matter what terrain you run on, as
the principles are the same.
Interested in learning more?
I offer informal introductory sessions
to Pose Method® for small groups who are interested in learning a little more about it, and formal coaching sessions
on an individual basis or for groups of up to 4 people. These sessions are highly interactive and practical, involving
a discussion of the fundamental aspects of running technique, video gait analysis, and exercises designed to help train your
body to move, and run, more efficiently.
